Licensing

The Licensing Department is responsible for processing the applications of 16 healthcare professions to determine whether medical professionals seeking licensure in Kansas have the necessary knowledge, skills, character, and credentials to practice safely. In addition, staff perform maintenance and verification for more than 34,000+ licensees.

License Application Process

Application Flowchart

  1. Licensing department receives application and supporting documents.
  2. Analyst reviews the information; identifies any missing items.
  3. If information/documents are missing a Missing Requirement Letter (MRL) is sent via email.
  4. Once the application is deemed complete, it is sent for final review where a Licensing Specialist makes a final determination if the application is accurate and complete, needs additional documentation, or contains ‘red flags’. Files with ‘red flags’, are forwarded to the Legal Department for review.
  5. If an application is sent for legal review, notification and contact information will be provided.
  6. After an application is approved, a new license letter is sent via email, the agency license search page is updated, and a wall certificate is mailed with 2-4 weeks.

All applications and documents are processed in date order received. April – July is the peak time for incoming applications and may result in increased processing times. Please note, we cannot give an approximate date when you will receive your license.

Renewal

Each license type has a specific annual renewal cycle. The renewal cycle last for a total of 10 weeks, the first 6 weeks is the “on-time renewal” and the last 4 weeks is the “late renewal”. Notices are sent via email at the beginning of the on-time and late renewal period.  If a license is not renewed by the end of the renewal cycle, the license is cancelled. Once a license is cancelled, you must complete the reinstatement process.

Criminal History - Licensure Consideration

Criminal history is considered by the Board as part of the application process. There are no absolute bars to licensure; each applicant is considered on a case by case basis.

Factors the Board may consider when an applicant has criminal history may include the following:

  1. The time elapsed since the misconduct.
  2. The seriousness of the misconduct.
  3. Applicant's character and maturity at the time of the misconduct.
  4. Applicant's understanding of the wrongness of the conduct.
  5. Applicant's conduct since misconduct.
  6. Applicant's rehabilitation.
  7. Applicant's present moral fitness.
  8. Applicant's professional competency.

After considering the criminal history as described above, the Board may grant the license, deny the license, or grant the license with limitations or conditions.
